Tram des Nations Residency

The Tram des Nations residency is a creative research programme conceived around the extension of the Line 15 tramway in Geneva. A multidisciplinary group of artists was invited to take up residency in the territory traversed by the future tramway, meeting its human and non-human inhabitants. Together, they built collective stories, accounts and ideas that prefigure this new infrastructure.

The project is proposed by the Fonds cantonal d’art contemporain, EXPLORE Geneva and Theatrum Mundi. It is financed by the Republic of the Canton of Geneva, the City of Geneva, and the City of Grand-Saconnex.

In 2022, the project played out through several stages: exploration of the territory, meetings and discussions between the artists and different publics (March and April), a public exhibition of works (June), and an online publication (October).

The residency’s objective is to explore the role of public art in involving current and future residents and users within the social, spatial, and economic transformation of the landscape and the city, as well as creating cultural links enriching the experiences and urban imaginaries of this territory.

Theatrum Mundi is a research centre based in London and Paris, which aims to expand the crafts of city-making through collaboration between artists and urbanists. Theatrum Mundi leads research and creative projects that stimulates new thinking on the way urban design stages public life in cities.

The Fonds cantonal d’art contemporain is both agent within and witness to the vitality of the Geneva art scene. Its aims focus on three main areas: the collection of contemporary art which it enriches, preserves and promotes; public commissions which it initiates and coordinates; support for creation which includes aid for production, scholarships, prizes and residencies.

EXPLORE engages citizens to participate in the creation of the city of tomorrow. Events, innovative public engagement, and calls for projects enable a shift in structures so that all inhabitants can feel involved in the change in progress. EXPLORE events present new forms of participation and dialogue that aim to question the city in its many forms.
